Chef Coco: A Culinary Journey from Jamaica to the U.S
Born in the picturesque coastal town of Lucea, Hanover, Chef Coco spent her early years immersed in the rich, vibrant culture of Jamaica. The early 1980s in Jamaica were a time of both challenge and resilience. Despite a modest upbringing, Coco's formative years were filled with the profound simplicity of farm life, where she learned the art of agriculture and the basics of cooking from her family. These early experiences sowed the seeds of her passion for food and flavor, as she spent countless hours in the kitchen, mastering traditional Jamaican recipes and techniques.
In 1989, Coco and her parents made a significant move to the Bronx, New York, seeking new opportunities. The vibrant, multicultural environment of the Bronx played a crucial role in broadening Coco’s culinary horizons. She attended school in upstate New York, where she furthered her education and honed her skills. After graduating, she was presented with a prestigious opportunity to work with Aramark, a global leader in food services.
Coco’s tenure with Aramark was marked by her role as the Assistant Director of the Kosher Eatery at New York University (NYU). Over six years, she made a name for herself by seamlessly blending kosher dietary laws with diverse, flavorful dishes. Her innovative approach and dedication to quality cuisine earned her accolades and a loyal following among the NYU community.
Driven by a desire to bring her culinary vision to a broader audience, Chef Coco transitioned to Maryland, where she embarked on her entrepreneurial journey. She established her own catering business and opened Coco’s Cafe, a pop-up café that quickly gained popularity. Her unique ability to create extraordinary flavor profiles, coupled with her versatility in preparing a wide range of cuisines, made Coco's Cafe a beloved destination.
Chef Coco’s reputation for excellence in the kitchen has led to a flourishing business with a faithful and rapidly growing clientele. She has had the privilege of catering an array of significant events, from intimate weddings and solemn funerals to large-scale retreats and corporate conferences.
